May have solved my lighting problem

Tue Jul 7, 2009, 5:05 PM
Well, I may have solved my lighting problem. I haven't been able to afford a proper lighting setup, or a good camera. Inspired by the results I got from the last time I took photos, I think I've found the solution. I've MacGuyvered a light box out of hangers, wire, an EVA plastic shower curtain and some tape. It seems to be working, though I probably need to tinker with it more and replace the plastic with a table cloth or bedsheet. However, it might be okay as it is now, I can't really tell because I've misplaced my tripod and my photos are blurry and shitty since I couldn't keep the camera steady.

On the note of the camera, my mom has SLR cameras around here somewhere. She might even have the Macro setup. So I may try using those despite my aversion to film based cameras. It will allow me to get a better shot and I believe that you can get digital prints these days. She's told me that they have short run film rolls too so I don't have to deal with having 23 exposures and having to use them all before I have them developed. I can't afford a DSLR, so this is probably a good alternative.

One thing that pisses me off though is that I can never keep the damn velvet clean and I can never get it clean for more than about 20 seconds. Seems like the second I clean it, crap starts gravitating towards it. I've kept it in plastic and it still gets dirty.

  • MP3 player of choice: I don't have one...but if I did...it wouldn't be a fruity seed pod.
  • Shell of choice: Guess I'm kind of partial to Abalone...shiney.
  • Wallpaper of choice: My walls are painted, not papered.
  • Skin of choice: I prefer smooth over wrinkly.
  • Favourite gaming platform: I've got all 3 Next Gen systems as of now. And my computer is pretty damn nifty.
  • Tools of the Trade: Well that depends on which trade now doesn't it?

yes i understand that its gas soldering, and that is exactly what i was looking for different ways (as in, without all the plumbing and cylinders) of doing. having said that, the other processes interest me as well (fusion) but have too narrow a range and are too expensive for someone doing this basically not for profit

I was just looking through different soldering options, and after reading a little more decided that the electric system isnt really good for much at all, there is a dedicated jump ring system but its only meant for solder filled rings, and yes, you do have to use flux...but then i came across something ive never heard of before, the electrolyte/water based machine that makes its own gas! it goes up to 6000 deg and theres a great assortment of tips, any thoughts on that one?

I don't know much about water torches and unfortunately don't know anyone that does either. In theory they're pretty cool. I almost had my hands on one, but the company that made it discontinued it because of safety reasons and I guess they just felt it wasn't worth it to them to do more research into them. But the unit was also from when they first started making them or something so it's not really something I want to base my opinions of them on. I wouldn't mind getting one of them myself since you don't have to have propane tanks. But I don't recall them being cheap.
They arent, but maintenace/supplies are, and theyre much cheaper than laser and even puk, without looking around (meaning just looking on rio) the basic model is under 1k, and if you think about propane/acetylene
and oxygen refills and going through the whole process, i mean i dont do this professionally so its not going to be like at the shop, guy comes in and rolls in the large tanks and takes the empty ones :)...Anyway im rambling, the flame they show looks similar to gas. Ive never soldered gold with anything other than gas/oxygen. Then again, ive worked in jewelry more than 9 years ago, but i doubt much has changed as far as basic non-automated production.

It's a hydrogen flame. But they're regular gas soldering. Laser and pulse-arc welders are bought for entirely different reasons so it's not really, most notably certain applications that torches either can't do or don't do well. So they're really two different tools, even though you can do some of the same work with them.
